Repairing or rebuilding a rotary vane vacuum pump

A rotary vane pump that has lost performance — longer pump-down, higher ultimate pressure, excess noise, or oil leakage — can usually be repaired rather than replaced. A full rebuild restores a worn pump to near-new condition. The procedure below follows standard practice for two-stage oil-sealed vane pumps.

Diagnose before disassembly

Record the ultimate pressure, pump-down time, oil level and condition, and noise/vibration. This tells you which stage or component is at fault.

Disassembly and inspection (work clean, follow the manual's order)

• Drain the oil completely and collect it for disposal.
• Remove the inlet filter, exhaust filter, and gas-ballast assembly.
• Separate the end covers and remove the rotors, vanes, and springs. Handle parts with care — vane and end-plate surfaces are precision-ground.
• Clean all components with a suitable solvent. Inspect the housing bore and end plates for scoring, wear, or corrosion.
• Measure the critical clearances (rotor to stator, vane to slot) with a feeler gauge and micrometer against the manufacturer's tolerances.

Replace worn parts

The most common wear items are the vanes, rotor springs, end plates, bearings, oil seals and O-rings, the exhaust valve, and the oil-mist separator. If the vanes are carbon or composite, replace them as a set. Always replace seals and gaskets on reassembly — they are cheap compared with the labour of a second teardown.

Reassembly and testing

• Reassemble in reverse order, applying the correct torque to each fastener (never overtighten end-plate screws — distortion ruins the clearances).
• Fill with the manufacturer-specified oil to the correct level.
• Run the pump with the inlet blanked and verify ultimate pressure with a calibrated gauge. Test gas-ballast operation and check for leaks around gaskets and oil sight glass.
• Confirm normal current draw, temperature, and noise.

Key precautions

Keep every part scrupulously clean (a single grain of grit will score a new vane), reuse nothing that is worn or cracked, use only specified oil, and verify performance after assembly. If you lack the tooling or drawings, a reputable service shop can rebuild the pump to factory tolerances.
